ICVA's 11th General Assembly (1999)
The 11th ICVA General Assembly was held in Geneva at the John Knox Centre from 2-3 October 1999. More than 35 member organisations attended, as well as a number of observers. The keynote speech, delivered by Mr. Martin Griffiths, Director of the Henry Dunant Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, focused on the changed international NGO environment and the increased need for coordination.
The General Assembly reaffirmed the direction of the new ICVA since 1998, as well as its services and products. The Assembly decided that development issues should be kept on ICVA's agenda, but that given the limited resources of the ICVA Secretariat, members should play a very active role in bringing sustainable development issues to the agenda.
New Statutes were unanimously adopted by the Assembly. Under the new Statutes, ICVA's General Assembly will meet once every three years and the size of ICVA's Executive Committee was reduced from 18 members to 11 (9 elected; 2 co-opted to ensure regional representation).
