Sexual Violence Against Refugees: Guidelines on Prevention and Response.UNHCR, Geneva 1995. (posted: 19 November 2002)
The Guidelines address ways to combat the occurrence of sexual violence and how to respond when incidents occur. They emphasize the need for education, training and information campaigns. The Guidelines underline the need for refugees, and in particular refugee women, to receive legal awareness training, leadership and skills training, and education.
 
Guidelines on the Protection of Refugee Women. UNHCR, Geneva 1991 (posted: 8 November 2002)
Women share the protection problems experienced by all refugees. In addition to this refugee women and girls have special protection needs that refelect their gender. These guidelines address Assessment and Planning, Protection Needs and Responses, Addressing Protection through Assistance and the Follow-up and reporting of Protection Problems related to refugee women
 
Investigating Women's Rights Violations in Armed Conflicts, Amnesty International and Rights and Democracy (International Centre for Human Rights and Democracy), 2001. (posted: 3 October 2002)
This is a useful, practical guide to investigating women's rights violations through a gender-sensitive approach to research. It suggests ways to address specific challenges faced by women's rights workers. The manual would be useful to human rights activists, humanitarian relief NGOs, UN and governmental agencies who work to collect information on violence against women. The publication is small and spiral-bound, making it easy to carry in the field.

Discusses the importance of identification, documentation and tracing for children separated from their parents. Based on the study of experiences in five countries.
 
Field Guidelines, United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). (posted: 3 October 2002)
The OCHA Field Guidelines includes a human rights section, which includes the reports of the UN Secretary-General on the Protection of Civilians in Conflict, human rights for relief workers, the Inter-Agency Expert Consultation on Protected Areas Review of the Literature, policy statements on sexual abuse and exploitation and gender, engagement with non-state actors, etc.
 
Children, Not Soldiers: Guidelines for working with child soldiers and children associated with fighting forces, Isobel McConnan and Sarah Uppard, Save the Children-UK, 2001. (posted: 3 October 2002)
This comprehensive publication (softcover book, 348 pages) provides an overview of the problem of child soldiers and the strategies/steps necessary to address different phases (prevention, recruitment, securing release, disarmament and demobilization, transition to civilian life, education and training, justice, etc.).

Global IDP Project. The Global IDP Training Project training package provides information on the definitions of internally displaced persons (IDPs), the responsibilities of governments and intergovernmental bodies toward IDPs, legal origins and obligations, protection from and during displacement and return/resettlement. Community-based programming is emphasized and described.
 
Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Training Modules on Internally Displaced Persons. (posted: 4 October 2002)
The Basic Course on Internal Displacement: Background, Program Foundations and Program Approaches for International Agency Staff is organized into six modules. While all the modules integrate protection themes, Modules 4-6 provide practical information about preventing displacement and providing protection assistance during displacement and return or resettlement.
 
The Refugee Experience: Psychosocial Training Module, Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford. (posted: 3 October 2002)
This 30-hour psychosocial training module for humanitarian assistance workers includes valuable information on psychological protection and the psychosocial effects of conflict and forced migration. Topics include gender and forced migration, sexual violence, child rights (including discussion of separation, exploitation, child soldiers, etc.)The programme emphasizes the importance of cultural issues in the design of psychosocial programmes.
 
Action for the Rights of Children (ARC), A Rights Based Training and Capacity Building Initiative (posted: 22 September 2002)
Action for the Rights of Children (ARC), a collaborative project between International Save the Children Alliance and UNHCR, seeks to to increase the capacity of UNHCR, governments and non- governmental organizations to protect and care for children and adolescents through all stages of refugee situations, from emergency interventions though durable solutions.
